It's my first massage ever, I’m excited but also terrified!

We are very excited for you to try massage and are honoured that you have chosen Denuo for your first appointment!

At the beginning of your appointment, we always ask about your experience with massage to make sure we have a chance to go over the basics—like positioning on the table, communication, pressure, comfort, areas to work on, disrobing, and more. These things feel natural for a seasoned massage enthusiast but can be a little intimidating for someone new—we get it!

Please ask as many questions as you need to ensure you feel ready and comfortable during your first appointment. We will also check in during the treatment to make sure you’re comfortable and able to fully relax.

Who is in charge during my treatment?

That’s simple—it’s you! We are here to facilitate your healing in a safe environment. We make recommendations, draw on our knowledge, and use massage modalities that best fit your needs. We may also suggest home care or additional treatments.

But the person who drives it all is you. Your expectations and preferences are always our top priority. That’s why we place such a strong emphasis on communication between you and your therapist. You’re in charge of the pressure, massage techniques used, areas treated, positioning on the table, how much conversation happens during your treatment, the use of lotion, and any additional modalities.

Underwear on or off?

Again—it’s up to you! You will be draped (covered with massage sheets) at all times, with no exposure. We can work around clothing if needed; however, it’s worth noting that oils may come into contact with fabrics and could cause staining.

If you’re expecting direct treatment on areas like the quads or hamstrings, longer or brief-style underwear can sometimes cover important attachment points. In those cases, we would work over the sheets to ensure a thorough treatment and the best possible results. The same applies to bra straps, which can sometimes limit access to certain areas.

I forgot to shave before my massage!

We know bodies! Hair is part of it—so is sweat, pimples, and skin tags—and it’s never something you need to feel embarrassed about. Our focus is on your soft tissue and your relaxation.

So don’t worry about grooming—just come in and enjoy your treatment!

I had a bad massage experience in the past. Should I even bother trying again?

We understand that sometimes a mismatch in expectations, too much or too little pressure, or techniques that don’t feel right can make a massage experience disappointing. Please know that, like in any profession, massage therapists have different styles—you may just not have found the right match yet.

Communication is key. Let us know about your past experience and be as specific as you can about what didn’t work for you. Together with your massage therapist, you’ll create a plan that works best for you—and we’ll make sure to stick to it. If you give us a chance, we’ll do our best to help you see massage therapy in a whole new way.

Do I need to prepare before a massage?

There isn’t really anything you need to do before your massage; however, a few pointers might help you relax more fully:

  • Arrive a few minutes early so you have plenty of time for a proper intake with your therapist.

  • Use the washroom—nothing is more distracting than realizing you have a full bladder in the middle of your massage!

  • If possible, put your phone on silent mode. Don’t let the outside world distract you.

  • Let us know if you’re too hot or too cold—the right temperature helps you fully relax.

  • Be sure to tell us if anything feels off on the table. We can make simple adjustments to keep you comfortable.

Is there anything I should do after my treatment?

Drink water and take it easy for the rest of the day. Rehydration is important, as it helps support soft tissue recovery. Depending on the reason for your appointment, it’s very likely you can simply continue with your day as usual.

Your therapist may also make specific recommendations or provide stretches or strengthening exercises for home care.

If we didn’t answer your question, feel free to reach out—we’ll be happy to help!
